Chao Brings Thai, Singaporean and Vietnamese Comfort Food to Kwun Tong

A new Southeast Asian dining destination has arrived in Kwun Tong. Chao, which draws inspiration from Thai, Singaporean and Vietnamese cuisines, officially opened at The Millennity on How Ming Street, offering a mix of shareable plates, heritage curries and specialty noodles in a lively setting.

The restaurant comes from Baljoet, the founder of popular East Tsim Sha Tsui Thai spot Ruên. Leading the kitchen is Thai Head Chef Aom, a Hong Kong-based chef with nearly two decades of experience, including a stint as head chef at Nara Thai.

The menu spans small bites, salads, curries and wok dishes designed for communal dining. Highlights include Yum Kha Gai (HK$78), a chicken-feet salad topped with fried chicken skin, and Goong Che Nompa (HK$108), raw shrimp sashimi with garlic and chili. For curry lovers, Pad Poo Phong Kari (HK$128) pairs crispy soft-shell crab with Vietnamese-style yellow coconut curry, while Nhue Cà Ri (HK$130) offers coconut beef brisket.

Noodle dishes arrive in traditional Thai stainless steel pots. Mama Jeh O (HK$158) recreates a late-night Bangkok favorite—Mama tom yum instant noodle soup loaded with fresh shrimp, crispy pork belly and pork balls. Guay Tiew Ruea (HK$88) is a rich boat noodle soup with Wagyu beef slices, pork rinds and Thai herbs. Goong Ob Woonsen (HK$118) features glass noodles baked with prawns in an umami-packed sauce.

Desserts are made in-house, including homemade ice cream (HK$48 for two scoops) in pandan, coconut and Thai milk tea, plus freshly prepared crêpe cakes (HK$58 per slice) in matching flavors.

The space seats 60 indoors, with forest-green tiles, red velvet banquettes and woven lanterns. An outdoor terrace accommodates 40 and is pet-friendly. Daily happy hour runs 12pm to 8pm with buy-one-get-one-free on selected cocktails, wines and beers.
